A classic bowl game that will live forever in our memories, but thankfully was captured on Super 8 film by my dad to remind us of our exact perspective as rabid fans in the stands at the 1977 Sun Bowl (El Paso, TX, 12/31/77) when Stanford's scrappy defense, led by Stanford Athletic Hall of Famers Gordy Ceresino (#95, 1977 Sun Bowl Defensive MVP) and DE Chuck Evans (#89) shut out LSU in the second half with three INTs and effective second-half containment of All-American running back Charles Alexander, enabling heroics from a star-studded offense led by consensus All-American QB Guy Benjamin (#7, 3 TD passes), future Pro Football Hall of Fame WR James Lofton (#30, 2 TD rec.), NFL OT Gordon King (#72) and College Football Hall of Fame all-purpose back Darrin Nelson (#31, 1 TD rec.) provided first-year coach Bill Walsh a memorable 24-14 bowl win over Hall of Fame coach Charlie McClendon's favored LSU Tigers' team, the first "non-Rose Bowl" post-season bowl game for Stanford (9-3)!
